Apple reportedly started building M2 chips for its next round of 2021 MacBooks

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:41 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Chris Smith dWeb.News Tech News

Apple confirmed rumors last summer that it would produce its own computer chips for Macs, stunning the world by saying that it planned to part ways with Intel for its laptops and desktops within two years. Apple debuted the M1 last November in the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and the new Mac mini. Apple then used the same System-in-Chip (SoC) on the 24-inch iMac and 2021 iPad Pro that were unveiled a few weeks ago.

Going forward, Apple is expected to upgrade the remaining Macs to M-series SoCs, with a next-gen M2 processor reportedly powering the 2021 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. A recent update from Apple's supply chain in Asia said that mini-LED screen makers would start shipping panels for the two devices in the third quarter of the year, implying that the two laptops might see some launch delays even if they're unveiled at WWDC next week. A different story from Asia says that TSMC might have the first M2 shipments ready by July.

Amazon backs legal pot, mellows on employee testing and tracking

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:40 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Mike Lewis dWeb.News Tech News

Dave Clark.

Amazon is supporting federal legislation that would both legalize marijuana and purge the criminal records of people previously arrested on pot charges. Additionally, the company will stop screening for use of the drug for certain classifications of employees.

But perhaps the biggest news for hundreds of thousands of warehouse employees is that the online retail giant is modifying its infamous Time off Task employee tracking software to provide more breathing room for bathroom breaks, conversations with supervisors, and equipment repair.

The changes, revealed in a blog post by Dave Clark, CEO of the worldwide consumer division, comes on the heels of another report about the company's unusually high warehouse injury rate

"Starting today, we're now averaging Time off Task over a longer period to ensure that there's more signal and less noise—reinforcing the original intent of the program, and focusing Time off Task conversations on how we can help," Clark wrote in the post published Tuesday.

"The goal is to re-focus the conversations on instances where there are likely true operational issues to resolve. We believe this change will help ensure the Time off Task policy is used in the way it was intended."

On the same day as Clark's post, union-backed Strategic Organizing Center published a study that it said showed Amazon fulfillment centers had 5.9 serious injuries for every 100 employees, a rate nearly 80% higher than non-Amazon warehouses. Similar to the reasons stated for the attempted union organization in Bessemer, Ala. this spring, the SOC blamed Amazon's Time-off-Task-driven work culture and pressure.

It was during that failed attempt to unionize workers in Alabama that one of Clark's anti-union tweets gained national attention after he attempted to spar with Sen. Bernie Sanders:

— Forcing workers to urinate in bottles
— Firing pregnant women for taking too many bathroom breaks
— Hiring analysts to monitor 'labor organizing threats'
— Making employees attend mandatory anti-union meetings

This is what a senior VP of Amazon calls a “progressive workplace.” https://t.co/l1BTe2SLqO

— Robert Reich (@RBReich) March 24, 2021

But Clark's post on Tuesday post reveals a decidedly different tack. While voicing support for the federal pot legalization and relaxed marijuana testing in a country where 17 states have now legalized recreational marijuana, Clark emphasized that the company sees a world beyond fast delivery.

Like many other corporations, he wrote, Amazon has purged prospective employees for pot use. That is now changing.

"However, given where state laws are moving across the U.S., we've changed course," he wrote. "We will no longer include marijuana in our comprehensive drug screening program for any positions not regulated by the Department of Transportation, and will instead treat it the same as alcohol use."

Additionally, he added, the company is supporting the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2021, legislation that would legalize pot and help clear expunge criminal records while investing in communities most affected by severe drug laws.

"We hope that other employers will join us, and that policymakers will act swiftly to pass this law."

dWeb.News Article from Andy Meek dWeb.News Tech News

Just a few days ago, we told you about a new Apple ad released as part of its "Privacy. That's iPhone." ad campaign. In this particular spot, which you can watch below, viewers follow a man going about his daily routine, and in each "scene" he's using a common app that facilitates everything from a coffee shop order to hailing a taxi ride. As the ad progresses, a growing number of people (who represent creepy, privacy-flouting apps) squeeze in beside and around him, creeping on him, and spying on what he's doing. Until, one by one, the protagonist of the ad uses Apple's App Tracking Transparency feature to erase all of them from existence, Thanos finger-snap style.

This time next week, the same concepts should get at least some degree of attention during WWDC 2021, when Apple executives and especially CEO Tim Cook are likely to tout the myriad privacy-related benefits of the iPhone as well as the rest of Apple’s ecosystem. This has all, of course, been front and center in recent weeks because of the cold war between Apple and Facebook that’s gone somewhat hot, with Apple now clamping down on Facebook’s business model (at least among iPhone users, which sits within the walled garden the Apple controls) that involves the social network tracking user behavior in order to serve up highly targeted ads.

With Apple recently introducing a new ad unit of its own to the company’s proprietary App Store, and coming roughly in tandem with the Facebook crackdown, at least one observer has described what Apple did here as having “robbed the mob’s bank.” Still, the iPhone maker’s moves here leave something to be desired among the hardest core of privacy advocates, such as the fact that the App Tracking Transparency feature is turned off by default. And when it comes to iPhone app privacy, too, there are still plenty of unfortunate realities herein that are a bit outside of Apple’s control.

How much is your life worth?

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:40 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Jason Shafrin dWeb.News Tech News

In a previous post, I answered this question from the perspective of government agencies:

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the answer is $10 million.  Other agencies place use a somewhat lower number.  The Food and Drug administration pegs the value at $9.5 million and the Department of Agriculture places the value at $8.9 million.

However, a new systematic literature review by Keller et al. (2021) tries to answer this questions based on published research. Of the 120 included in the systematic review of the value of a statistical life (VSL), 63% were stated preference (e.g., contingent valuation, discrete choice experiment), 36% were revealed preference (e.g., compensating wage differentials), and 1% used the human capital approach. Based on this approach, the authors found that:

Estimates for VSL varied substantially by context (sector, developed/developing country, socio-economic status, etc), with the median of midpoint purchasing power parity–adjusted estimates of 2019 US$5.7 million ($6.8 million, $8.7 million, and $5.3 million for health, labor market, and transportation safety sectors, respectively).

The authors also note that:

Overall, the VSL literature suggests that individuals value a life-year more highly than willingness-to-pay thresholds used in health technology assessment.

Logistics Software Development: Custom Solutions vs SaaS Route By Chanakya Kyatham

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 05:39 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from jaydiaz2013 dWeb.News Tech News

Streamlined logistics is imperative today for modern entrepreneurs planning to compete with established business giants or launch new ventures. It is far more important for businesses in the eCommerce industry to transport goods and products to far-off destinations. However, a minor fall in the logistics model can lead to several discrepancies like ruined business relations and canceled orders. Due to this, companies have started to rely on logistics software.

What is Logistics Software?

In the era of digitization, logistics software automates several key logistic processes and reduces human error. This way it ensures uninterrupted productivity to business owners. Be it inventory, order processing, invoicing, or general ledger, modern logistics software is developed to support all these operations. Connected with enormous data storage in the form of cloud computing or private hosting servers, the sheer amount of data that logistic software manages cannot be processed manually.

Logistics Software Trends

1. Real-Time Supply Chain Visibility (SCV): Modern supply chain software can reflect real-time supply chain dynamics. For example, they can display weather analysis ahead of time, select the best route for transportation and give traffic updates. Along with this, logistic software is already popular for providing inventory updates in real-time.

2. Omni-Channel Delivery: Businesses find omnichannel delivery to be more beneficial to customers as it improves the overall customer experience. Thus, to match these requirements, omnichannel delivery management is also integrated into various logistic software. These omni-channels include:

Walk-in Store to customer
Warehouse to customer
Supplier to customer
Distribution store to customer
Back from customer to the company

3. Virtual Assistants: The entrance of machine learning and artificial intelligence models in the supply chain industry improved the user experience for both customers and business owners. For example, store managers can ask a chatbot for the location of a particular product. The same goes for the customers who can inquire about warehouse stock availability without making a phone call.

4. Data Analytics: Logistics software is made to support Big Data and process large-scale data analysis. The reports prepared by this software assist businesses in streamlining the delivery processes, such as reducing warehouse to delivery hub timings and store products more efficiently.

5. Third-Party Integrations (TPIs): Both custom and SaaS development methods offer various third-party integrations to business owners. These integrations are small software independent of any industry and can be used to increase the functionality and features of large-scale software. For example, Mail Chimp, which is an email automation integration.

Methods for Logistics Software Development

The two popular ways you can develop logistics software for your business are custom and SaaS development. You can read about them in detail and check their pros and cons below:

1. Custom Logistic Software

Custom logistic software is tailored as per your company's requirements, so it is more efficient at resolving your logistic problems. As the entire custom development process begins from scratch, this route is lengthy but worth spending your money on. On the other hand, there is ready-made software available in the market that IT vendors can customize as per your business needs and provide the same benefits. With custom logistics software, business owners also get the flexibility to integrate any third-party software into the end product.

Pros of Custom Logistics Software

Tailored as per your business needs
You get the option to select software development technology
You exclusively own the software
Obtain a lifetime usage license for the software
Flexibility to add any third-party integrations
Are not subject to any software provider's processing fee
Receive complete documentation for the onboarding process

Cons of Custom Logistics Software

Takes time to develop
Community support for custom software is not available
It takes time to switch to another software (But is usually not required)

2. SaaS Logistics Software

SaaS is an acronym for Software as a Service, meaning it is software that is provided to business owners and transport companies monthly (like a regular service) and is charged on a recurrent basis. Some SaaS solutions providers also offer multi-tier software packages with higher tiers having more features than the lower ones. SaaS logistics solutions are developed keeping the general requirements of businesses in mind, and thus they cannot help you with your unique business problems.

Pros

Quick to set up as they are pre-developed
Community support is available
Have all essential features required to support logistics operations
Available at small recurrent costs
Are tested and tried by hundreds or thousands of businesses
Software updates are frequently launched

Cons

The business owner never owns the software
Only select TPIs can be integrated
Not cost-effective in the long run due to recurrent fee
You may be subjected to a payment processing fee

Should I opt for SaaS or Custom Solutions?

Many entrepreneurs find it difficult to make a clear-cut decision between these two. While SaaS appears to be more economically advantaged, custom development promises to solve all unique business problems. You can resolve this dilemma by looking at three factors:

1. Price Factor: Independent of your budget, the price factor includes an estimate for the value you will be getting for your investment in both SaaS and custom software.

Custom software without a doubt provides more value as it is software specifically designed to meet your business requirements. It is reliable for businesses of all sizes. On the other hand, SaaS logistic software is more suitable for small size businesses that are yet to expand their customer base. As SaaS comes with recurring payments, businesses often end up paying more than the software's worth in the long run.

Moreover, moving on to custom software at a later stage means reinvestment with overhead onboarding costs.

2. Time Factor: For entrepreneurs facing a lot of management troubles and requiring an immediate solution to salvage their crashing business, SaaS is their only option.

Custom logistic development does come up with fast development options, such as readymade solution customization and agile development methodologies. However, it still cannot match the deployment speed of SaaS solutions that only require businesses to sign up and set up the software on their server.

3. Quality Factor: In the third factor, both SaaS and custom logistic software come with varying quality levels. This means that if you make a bad selection in a SaaS provider or custom software development firm, you can end up with poor quality software that may give a lot of bugs and errors.

Moreover, both SaaS and Custom logistic software have their pros in terms of quality. For example, while you cannot control the quality of SaaS software, you can easily switch from one SaaS solution to another. On the other hand, switching from custom logistic software is difficult but you get full quality control over the logistics software.

How to Find a Custom Software Development Company?

The list of SaaS logistics solutions is easily available on the internet. However, the businesses opting for custom development do require a proper set of guidelines to find a company they can rely on. We have divided these guidelines into our 'To Do' and 'Not to Do' list below:

To Do: Search on Critic Websites

Professional critic websites are already evaluating software development companies throughout the year. Plus, they are also aware of the criteria to accurately estimate the performance value and work quality of an IT company. Some websites like softwareworld, Clutch, and Good firms also distribute yearly awards to top-performing companies.

Not to Do: Search on Freelancing Websites

Freelancing websites like UpWork and Freelancers are populated by developers whose work is difficult to evaluate. While the number of their completed projects does highlight their experience, it is not a measure of quality and performance. In addition, there are also numerous fraudulent companies operating on UpWork who outsource projects at cheaper rates to inexperienced developers.

To Do: Discuss your Requirements with the Sales Team

To ensure how good a software development company will be for your logistics project, discuss your requirements with its sales team. Not only the team can guide you towards the development process, but also explain how it aims to develop the software. You can also ask for a quotation and negotiate.

Not to Do: Select the Software Development Impatiently

After discussing your project requirements with one company, it is wise to move on to the next custom software development company and share your requirements. This way, you can get multiple quotations and delivery timelines. Next, you can compare two companies against each other and select the most reliable one.

To Do: View Portfolios and Case Studies Thoroughly

Maybe a company has worked for similar projects before and those projects shared the same requirements as yours. To know, you can ask the sales team for a case study and portfolio. They are a very reliable way to evaluate a company's work quality and usefulness.

Not to Do: Avoid Customer Support and Post-Deployment Support

Various IT companies offer free technical support for a limited period of time. Other companies don't even respond in case of any issues. Make sure you select the one that provides efficient omnichannel technical support to keep your business running smoothly.

Summing Up

Improved logistics means better warehousing, quicker transport, accurate inventory tracking, and much more. To benefit from these streamlined operations, businesses can opt for both SaaS or Custom logistics software. As long as this software perform their job and assist businesses in resolving their logistics problems, they are highly recommended to both online and offline businesses. Choosing between SaaS and custom solutions is up to the business owner and we hope the aforementioned information helps you.

FAQs:

1. Which is cheaper to use: SaaS or Custom Logistics Software?

As SaaS comes with recurrent costs, over time, it can be more expensive than custom software. For example, let's suppose a custom logistic software costs you $3000 and a SaaS solution costs $80 per month. You own the custom software but not the SaaS solution. In a period of 3 years, you will end up paying more than $3000, i.e. the cost of custom software. As more time passes by, let's say 5 years, you would have paid $4,800. This amount will keep on increasing and in the end, you will end up paying more than the solution's worth. Also note that all these calculations are excluding any processing fees, technical support, or TPI costs.

2. How to do Feature Selection for Logistics Software?

Be it custom software or a SaaS solution, as the business owner, you should be aware of the features you are looking for in your logistics software. This feature selection can take time. SaaS solutions have a fixed list of features, it is possible that you may not find all the features that you require in a single SaaS software. On the other hand, you can get any feature you want in custom software. You can select these features after reading guides on the internet or doing a comparative analysis of different SaaS software. Lastly, your software development company can also assist you in feature selection.

3. What is the Processing Fee in SaaS Software?

The processing fee refers to the payment processing fee in case any funds transfer is done from the software. This processing fee is charged per transaction and is to be paid along with the monthly recurring fee. For example, if the total monthly transactions are done on the software amount to $1000, the processing fee is 5% and the monthly fee is $80, the total amount you pay for this particular month is $80 (monthly charges) + $50 (processing fee) = $130.

4. What is the Fastest Approach to Custom Logistics Software Development?

If you want early hands-on software, the most recommended software development approach is agile development. In this approach, the software is developed in multiple sprints and each sprint is a small development cycle on its own. The first sprint only includes the basic features required to make the software feasible and is launched early. Thus, you can start using the software after the completion of the first sprint, whereas advanced features can be added later on.

Seattle’s King County becomes first U.S. county to ban government use of facial recognition software

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:42 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Mike Lewis dWeb.News Tech News

RealNetworks' SAFR arms schools with facial recognition technology. (SAFR Photo)

In a unanimous vote, the King County Council approved a ban on law enforcement use of facial recognition technology, making it the first county in the nation to put such restrictions into law.

Tuesday's 9-0 vote prohibits Seattle-area county administrative and executive offices from using facial recognition technology or information to identify suspects or potential suspects. Privacy advocates have sought to ban the use of such technology because of its varied accuracy in identifying suspects, algorithmic racial biases, and perceived encroachment on civil liberties.

"The use of facial recognition technology by government agencies poses distinct threats to our residents, including potential misidentification, bias, and the erosion of our civil liberties," King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles said in a statement.

Kohl-Welles added that facial recognition technology has great potential for misuse. "Our vote today makes King County the first county in the nation to pass this type of ban," she said.

The ban does not restrict individual cities, citizens, or schools within King County from using facial recognition technology, only official county government offices. And it does not restrict county investigators from trading information with other law enforcement agencies as long as they did not specifically request information gleaned from facial recognition technology.

In all, the legislation approved by the council is "fairly innocuous," said Os Keyes, a facial recognition expert in the University of Washington's human-centered design and engineering department.

Keyes praised the legislation as broad enough to help protect civil liberties while being sufficiently narrow that it does not block legitimate investigations. "It doesn't limit interagency cooperation," they said, "and it limits general surveillance on a day-to-day basis. It's thoughtful and short."

Facial recognition technology — from government-enabled CCTV systems to Amazon's Rekognition system — has become increasingly controversial as privacy advocates assert it is creating a perpetual surveillance state. Amazon and Microsoft recently renewed their bans on sales of such technology to domestic law enforcement.

Keyes, a doctoral candidate at the university, said the legislation accomplishes two significant things, one obvious and the other less so but equally important.

First, it prevents the county from setting up a facial recognition camera system throughout the county. These are not simply video security systems; they are data gathering systems that interpret, analyze, and store facial data to alert authorities about potential suspects. But the tech is not always accurate, especially when parsing faces with darker complexions.

Second, Keyes said, it helps halt the secret email exchanges between investigators who send photos around for other agencies to run through facial analysis systems for departments that lack the technology or have banned it.

"They have done this in the past to evade the need for a warrant," Keyes said. "This is not hypothetical; they had long mailing lists to send photos around on an informal basis."

The use of a private, law enforcement mailing list designed for informal, specific sharing facial recognition tech in Washington state was documented in 2019 by the website OneZero.

The "cross-department requests…includes officers from at least a dozen police departments, from large organizations like the Seattle police and Pierce County Sheriff's Department to smaller ones like the Richland and Marysville police," OneZero reported.

Keyes said the new bill should prevent this type of sharing — at least when it comes to King County law enforcement. Moreover, they said, it provides recourse if it continues. "It provides a right-of-action," they said. "So the person who is surveilled can sue."

Cities such as Portland and San Francisco have approved such bans. The Washington chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union applauded King County's new restriction.

"With this vote, King County joins a growing number of local jurisdictions across the nation that have approved similar restrictions," Jennifer Lee of ACLU Washington said in a statement.

She added: "Now it's time for a federal ban on government use of facial recognition to ensure that no one's civil liberties and civil rights are violated by a pervasive and often inaccurate technology that disproportionately misidentifies people of color and heightens the risk of surveillance and deadly encounters with law enforcement in already marginalized and overpoliced communities."

Amazon will soon share your home Wi-Fi with strangers’ devices – here’s how to opt out

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:43 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Chris Smith dWeb.News Tech News

There's no denying that Amazon operates the most extensive network of smart home products in the world, although using the word "network" to describe it isn't entirely accurate just yet. However, that’s about to change. All the Echo speakers and Ring security cameras out there will soon be linked in a massive mesh network beginning next Tuesday, June 8th, which is when the new Amazon Sidewalk service will be turned on. This new Amazon feature allows all your Amazon smart home devices to share your home WI-Fi with Amazon gadgets that belong to strangers. The feature is meant to improve coverage and increase security, offering devices an additional network connection to fall back to if the primary internet service becomes unavailable.

As secure as Sidewalk may be, Amazon has had some privacy mishaps in the past that were related to Echo devices. With that in mind, allowing strange devices to use your Wi-Fi network might sound worrisome to some people. But Amazon Sidewalk is an optional feature, meaning that any Echo and Ring product owners can opt out of it and ensure their devices will not share their Wi-Fi connection with other Amazon devices in the neighborhood. You’ll have to be proactive if you don’t want your devices to be a part of the Sidewalk service, however, because it will automatically be enabled by default.

The Illusion of Commitment

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:43 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Adam Bornstein dWeb.News Tech News

It's easy to commit to anything. It's something few people are willing to admit. Because it's not the commitment that matters.

You can commit to a workout program or a diet, and begin with the best intentions.

But, what do you owe those plans? Absolutely nothing.

If you let down the plan, it's frustrating. But, it doesn't hurt.

Commitment alone has limited value.

That's why many committed people don't succeed.

If you want to change, you need to attach your commitment to your soul. Or, at least it should feel that way.

It has to be deeply personal.

It needs to operate at a different level.

Effective commitments are a paradox. They are an uncomfortable mix of fear, excitement, optimism, pessimism, and insecurity.

That's where you find the breakthroughs.

Self-improvement lives within everyone, but it's usually buried under uncertainty, self-sabotage, or prior failure.

To make commitment work, you need to be willing to risk something valuable.

When you are ready to change, connect to more than what you want to change.

Focus on who you want to become, or what you fail to lose if you don't follow through on your commitment.

Set stakes. Create reminders.

That is where you will find your will to succeed.

Watermelon Lime Sorbet

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:43 PM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Adam Bornstein dWeb.News Tech News

Why I love it: For starters it is delicious.

Summer is peak season for many fruits. You can get creative and use almost any fruit from your Farmer's Market haul—watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, peaches, honeydew, etc.

The prep: Just chop and freeze.

Ingredients

2 cups frozen watermelon cubes
1 lime
1/4 banana, fresh or frozen
1/4 cup warm water
Fresh mint (optional)

Directions

Combine watermelon, juice of 1 lime, banana, and half the amount of water (reserve the other half, add if needed) into a high-power blender.
Blend for 1 minute or until smooth.
Top with fresh mint and serve!
